Castroville is a historic Hill Country town in Medina County about 25 miles west of San Antonio on US-90, founded in 1844 by Alsatian settlers. Its National Register historic district holds nearly 100 colonial Alsatian structures, and the town offers a slower pace and more home for the money.
Founded in 1844 by Henri Castro, Castroville preserves roughly 96 colonial Alsatian houses and structures from the 1840s through 1920, many facing the Medina River. The architecture is unlike anything else in Texas, and the historic district is walkable on a self-guided tour. Landmark Inn, the Steinbach House, and the riverfront make it a genuinely special place to live.
Castroville gives you more space per dollar than the nearer suburbs, with a softer, slower market. Homes range from historic riverfront properties to newer homes on larger lots. For buyers who value character and quiet over a shorter drive, it offers some of the best value in the region.
US-90 runs straight into the west side of San Antonio, about 28 to 32 minutes to downtown in normal traffic, and the route tends to move better than the crowded north corridors. Basic services are in town, and the city's conveniences are close enough for the times you need them.
